FAMILY HOLIDAYS

For many of our families, holiday is a very hard time. Not only we have to face economic problems due to our children’s disability, but these children’s every-day life is a really complex one.
In fact, for our kids it’s difficult to get used to a new situation, many hotels are not conformed to their disability, parents are usually scared about medical difficulties linked to epileptic crisis and, to sum up, taking care of these kids means lack of rest and entertainment.
However, holiday means not only entertainment, but the chance to make new friendships, exchange life experiences, help each other, and find a new feeling of belonging and sympathy too. How could we find a way to combine such different needs?
Since 2009 we, as an association, co-work with IN THE WALL http://www.holeinthewallcamps.org, an association which operates in Italy with the DYNAMO CAMP project, http://www.dynamocamp.org.
Dynamo Camp is the first Ricreative Therapy Camp in Italy planned to support children suffering from severe and/or chronic diseases or in post-hospitalization convalescence kids. It’s free of charge for 7-17 year-old children and teens.
Dynamo Camp offers children the possibility to enjoy their childhood once again through safe and funny activities, aimed to support them in becoming more self-confident and exploring their inner possibilities and abilities. There camp also offers specific activities for both parents and healthy siblings of these kids, in order to support the entire family who has to deal with the every-day reality of illness.
The most important characteristic of the camp can be described as a deep love for beautiful things, spirit of entertainment, but also competence and professionalism. During the Camp children can enjoy lots of activities such as swimming pool activities, visiting a farm, theatre, trying archery and climbing, etc. The general organization offers activities for disabled kids/teens, healthy kids/teens and adults as well as family moments. Both the Camp staff and the volunteers too are trained to look after disabled and wealthy kids in order to let their parents enjoying private moments.
The collaboration started in 2009, when 5 of our families joined the Camp with other associations’ families.
Both in 2010 and in 2011, nineteen Ring14 families coming from all over the world had the opportunity to enjoy two 10-days sessions during August, while the teen group “to be siblings” has been hosted too.
Unfortunately, regarding summer 2012, our families will not have the possibility to join the Camp, so we have sent the request to HOLE IN THE WALL camps in other countries, in the hope to have the possibility to be welcomed in this wonderful experience again.
